I spent the first 13 years of life in South Africa, mainly with my mother just outside Johannesburg and not far from Soweto. Living with a broad-minded parent in such a closed-minded community gave me an amazing insight into the way South Africa was in the early nineties.
From 13 – 21yrs we lived in Scotland, on a farm 15 miles inland from St Andrews, a couple of years in Falkirk for college and finally in St Andrews itself, working in Rufflets Country House hotel which was my first taste of my passion of the hospitality industry. This is also where I met my future wife when we fell in love at first sight.
Together we moved to London!
We spent 7 years in London, on and off, with most of my time in London spent at The Ivy which is where my passion was moulded into a true direction. It was here I learned how to read people and their needs in a restaurant, this would be the basis of my studies of people because at the end of the day, hospitality is all about reading people.
In 2005 Nina and I came over to New Zealand to help open The Falls Restaurant as our first venture into being business owners. Using my new-found knowledge of people and reading them helped us to turn a restaurant from losing money every year to breaking even in the first and regular clientèle jump from 10% to 80% in 2 years.
This is where I started to delve in social media practice, using Facebook and Twitter personally then utilizing it in our business practice.
In 2011 we sold our shares in The Falls and I am now working in AvantiPlus Waitakere, selling bikes and using social media to get information from ‘your local bike shop’ to the wider audience.
In 2013 I completed my first Ironman and recorded my adventure to the finish line. In the same year Nina and I found out we were to have an addition to the family. This is going to be a good year……..
